People look for these under several names — empty character, blank space symbol, invisible letter, invisible symbol, blank symbol — and mean the same characters each time. There is no agreed term, because these were never named as a group by anyone.
Where these symbols come from
These are real characters that render as nothing. ⠀ is the blank Braille pattern, ㅤ the Hangul filler, and U+200B a zero-width space added so that software knows where a long word may break. None of them were designed to be invisible text — that use is a side effect of their having no visible shape.
What people use them for
The common uses are a blank message or username where a platform refuses an empty field, indentation in a bio where leading spaces get trimmed, and spacing between lines. The Braille blank ⠀ and the Hangul filler ㅤ are the two that survive most platforms, because they count as ordinary visible characters rather than as whitespace.
How to copy an invisible character
- Tap or click the symbol you want. It goes straight to your clipboard — no selecting, no long press.
- Paste it wherever you need it: a bio, a message, a document, a spreadsheet.
Known problems
Platforms increasingly strip these. A field that trims whitespace will usually also trim the zero-width space, and several have added the Braille blank and Hangul filler to that list. Using them to fake an empty name violates the terms of service on some platforms.
These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.
Common questions
- Will an invisible character work as an empty username?
- Sometimes, and it is worth knowing that several platforms treat this as a terms of service violation rather than a trick. Platforms also strip these characters more often than they used to, so an empty name set today may revert on its own later.
- How do I copy a symbol on my phone?
- Tap it. Every symbol on this page copies to your clipboard on a single tap, with no selection or long press needed. Nothing is sent anywhere — the copying happens in your browser.
- Why does a symbol show as an empty rectangle?
- The font on that device does not cover the character. There is no fallback: for a reader whose font lacks it, the symbol is simply missing. Older Android builds and minimal desktop setups are where this happens most.
