Combining styles such as strikethrough and underline attach a second character to every letter, and both count against the limit — so they cost twice what they look like. X counts characters from the mathematical Unicode block as two as well, which is why switching the platform above changes the number without the text changing.
These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.
Common questions
- Why does my bio get cut off even though it looked short enough?
- Almost always a combining style. Strikethrough, underline, overline and the slashed style add an invisible second character after every letter, so twenty visible letters cost forty against the limit. The counter above accounts for this.
- Can I use line breaks in a bio?
- Instagram and TikTok accept them in the bio field, though the app occasionally strips them when you paste rather than type. Each break also counts as a character. Discord status and X bio are single-line fields.
- Are these limits official?
- Mixed, and the platform pages mark which is which. X and Discord document theirs. Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp do not publish a bio limit at all, so those numbers come from consistent third-party reports and should be treated as close rather than exact.
