Common questions
- Can I use styled text in my YouTube username?
- No. The handle accepts only a-z, 0-9, period, hyphen and underscore. Styled text works in the other fields listed above.
- Are these YouTube limits official?
- 0 of 2 are stated in YouTube's own help pages; the rest are not documented and come from consistent third-party reports. The table above marks which is which. Limits change, so treat an undocumented number as a good estimate rather than a guarantee.
- Why does it look different on someone else's phone?
- Each device renders these characters with whatever font covers them. Where coverage is missing you get empty rectangles instead of letters, which is more common on older devices.
These styles are not fonts. They are separate Unicode characters that merely look like formatted letters, so a screen reader does not treat them as ordinary text: depending on the software they are spelled out character by character, announced by their technical names, or skipped altogether. Use them sparingly, and never for content that has to be understood. Full explanation.
