Where these characters come from
The Fraktur set was encoded for mathematics, where blackletter traditionally marks Lie algebras and ideals. Five capitals came from the older Letterlike Symbols block, including the โ and โ that mathematicians use for the real and imaginary parts of a complex number.
Like most styles here, gothic letters live in Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block โ why that block exists.
What people use gothic text for
Blackletter belongs to gaming and music profiles: Steam names, Discord servers, band and tattoo-adjacent accounts. It carries a strong connotation that works for some audiences and badly misfires for others, which is why it is rare in professional contexts and common in clan tags.

How to get gothic text
- Type or paste your words into the box above.
- Find the Gothic row โ it is the first one โ and press Copy.
- Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.
Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.
The same thing goes by several names โ gothic font copy and paste, old english, fraktur, blackletter โ and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Gothic vs Gothic Bold
Both are blackletter; the bold version simply has heavier strokes and a complete character set with no borrowed letters. Regular Gothic is more legible at large sizes, Gothic Bold at small ones.

Known problems with gothic text
Blackletter is the style most often rejected by name filters, because the same characters are used in spoofed usernames.
These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles โ normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.
These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.
Where gothic text is commonly used
Common questions
- Is gothic text a real font?
- No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look gothic. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
- Why do numbers stay unchanged?
- Unicode defines no gothic numerals, so digits are left as they are. Every tool that claims otherwise is substituting digits from a different style, which looks inconsistent next to the letters.
- Why do a few letters look slightly different?
- Unicode added some of these letters decades earlier than the rest, in a different block, and reserved the matching slots in the newer block instead of duplicating them. Those few characters were drawn by different hands, so their shapes do not match perfectly.
- Will screen readers read this correctly?
- Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
