Italic Font Generator

Slanted letters. Digits stay unchanged, because Unicode defines no italic numerals.

Where these characters come from

Italic is missing one character: lowercase h was already encoded in 1993 as the Planck constant, so Unicode reserved the slot and the italic h you get here is that older symbol.

Like most styles here, italic letters live in Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block โ€” why that block exists.

What people use italic text for

Italic carries tone rather than emphasis: a quoted line, a subtitle under a display name, a stage direction in a roleplay server. Because the set has no digits, a date or a price dropped into italic text snaps back to the surrounding font, which is why it suits prose and not data.

How to get italic text

  1. Type or paste your words into the box above.
  2. Find the Italic row โ€” it is the first one โ€” and press Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.

Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.

The same thing goes by several names โ€” slanted text, cursive italic โ€” and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Italic vs Cursive

Italic is a slanted version of ordinary letters; Cursive is a different letterform altogether. Italic stays readable at paragraph length, Cursive does not. Pick Italic when the text has to be read, Cursive when it mainly has to be seen.

Known problems with italic text

Watch the h โ€” it is a different character from the rest of the set, and a few fonts render it noticeably lighter than its neighbours.

These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles โ€” normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

Is italic text a real font?
No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look italic. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
Why do numbers stay unchanged?
Unicode defines no italic numerals, so digits are left as they are. Every tool that claims otherwise is substituting digits from a different style, which looks inconsistent next to the letters.
Why do a few letters look slightly different?
Unicode added some of these letters decades earlier than the rest, in a different block, and reserved the matching slots in the newer block instead of duplicating them. Those few characters were drawn by different hands, so their shapes do not match perfectly.
Will screen readers read this correctly?
Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
