Where these characters come from
Bold italic is a complete set with no borrowed characters, but like plain italic it has no digits, so any numbers in your text stay in the surrounding font.
Like most styles here, bold italic letters live in Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block โ why that block exists.
What people use bold italic text for
This is the style people reach for when bold alone is not enough and the text is short โ a single word at the top of a bio, a tagline, a stream title. At any length it becomes hard to read, so it works as a marker rather than as body text.

How to get bold italic text
- Type or paste your words into the box above.
- Find the Bold Italic row โ it is the first one โ and press Copy.
- Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.
Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.
The same thing goes by several names โ fat italic โ and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Bold Italic vs Bold
Bold Italic adds a slant that costs readability without adding much weight. For a single word that must be noticed, plain Bold almost always works better; Bold Italic earns its place when the tone is meant to be informal as well as emphatic.

Known problems with bold italic text
At small sizes the slant plus the weight makes individual letters hard to tell apart, particularly i, l and t.
These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles โ normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.
These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.
Common questions
- Is bold italic text a real font?
- No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look bold italic. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
- Why do numbers stay unchanged?
- Unicode defines no bold italic numerals, so digits are left as they are. Every tool that claims otherwise is substituting digits from a different style, which looks inconsistent next to the letters.
- Will screen readers read this correctly?
- Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
