Where these characters come from

The combining low line sits below the preceding character and joins up with its neighbours, which is what makes the underline look continuous rather than dashed. Like all combining marks it doubles the character count, and some fonts render the join imperfectly so the line breaks between letters.

What people use underline text for

Underlining is used for headings inside plain-text fields that have no heading formatting: a section label in a long bio, a title in a Discord channel description. Online, underline also reads as a link, so underlined text that is not clickable can mislead people.

How to get underline text

  1. Type or paste your words into the box above.
  2. Find the Underline row — it is the first one — and press Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.

Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.

The same thing goes by several names — underlined text — and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Underline vs Overline

An underline reads as a link or a heading; an overline has no established meaning online. Underline is the right choice when you want the text to be understood as a label, Overline when you want it to look unfamiliar.

Known problems with underline text

Whether the line joins between letters depends entirely on the font, so the same text can look continuous on one device and dashed on another.

These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles — normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

Is underline text a real font?
No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look underline. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
Why does my text hit the character limit so quickly?
Underline adds a combining character after every letter, and both count against a field limit. Expect roughly half the visible length you would normally get.
Will screen readers read this correctly?
Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
