Where these characters come from
This uses a combining long stroke overlay, a character with no width of its own that renders across the letter before it. Combining marks were designed for accented letters in languages that lacked precomposed forms. The practical consequence: every letter costs two characters, so any field with a length limit fills up twice as fast.
What people use strikethrough text for
The dominant use is the visible edit — a word crossed out and replaced, where the crossing out is the joke. It also marks sold-out items, cancelled dates and old prices in marketplace listings and bios, in fields that offer no formatting of their own.

How to get strikethrough text
- Type or paste your words into the box above.
- Find the Strikethrough row — it is the first one — and press Copy.
- Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.
Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.
The same thing goes by several names — crossed out text, crossed text generator, cross out text, cross out — and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Strikethrough vs Slashed
Strikethrough draws a horizontal line through the text and reads as an edit or a correction. Slashed cuts diagonally and reads as a rejection. Strikethrough is the safer choice: it renders more consistently across fonts and stays legible at longer lengths.

Known problems with strikethrough text
Some apps strip combining marks on paste, and a few mail clients treat heavy combining use as a spam signal.
These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles — normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.
These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.
Common questions
- Is strikethrough text a real font?
- No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look strikethrough. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
- Why does my text hit the character limit so quickly?
- Strikethrough adds a combining character after every letter, and both count against a field limit. Expect roughly half the visible length you would normally get.
- Will screen readers read this correctly?
- Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
