Where these characters come from

The combining overline was encoded for mathematics and physics, where a bar above a symbol marks a mean value, a complex conjugate or a repeating decimal. Used across a whole word it produces a continuous rule, though the joins depend on the font.

What people use overline text for

A line above the text is unusual enough to work as a divider or a frame for a single word. It has no established convention online, which is both why it stands out and why it carries no meaning on its own.

How to get overline text

  1. Type or paste your words into the box above.
  2. Find the Overline row — it is the first one — and press Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.

Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.

The same thing goes by several names — line above text — and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Overline vs Underline

Underline is far more common and is immediately understood as emphasis or a heading. Overline is worth choosing precisely when you do not want that association and are after an unusual frame instead.

Known problems with overline text

Overlines clip against the line above in tight line spacing, which is common in bios where lines sit close together.

These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles — normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

Is overline text a real font?
No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look overline. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
Why does my text hit the character limit so quickly?
Overline adds a combining character after every letter, and both count against a field limit. Expect roughly half the visible length you would normally get.
Will screen readers read this correctly?
Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
