Where these characters come from

There is no upside-down block in Unicode. This effect is assembled by hand from characters that happen to resemble rotated letters, borrowed from Latin Extended, the IPA, Greek and Cyrillic — the rotated r is a Latin turned r, the rotated e is a schwa. The text is also reversed, so that reading it on a rotated screen runs in the right direction.

What people use upside down text for

Flipped text is a joke format: a reply that reads as being said upside down, a bio line that makes someone tilt their phone, an April Fools profile. It is also used to signal confusion or disbelief in comment threads, where the meaning is carried by the effect rather than by the words.

How to get upside down text

  1. Type or paste your words into the box above.
  2. Find the Upside Down row — it is the first one — and press Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.

Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.

The same thing goes by several names — flip text, words upside down, flipped text — and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Upside Down vs Mirror

Upside Down rotates characters by 180 degrees and reverses their order; Mirror flips them horizontally only. Upside Down has much better character coverage, so it converts most text completely, while Mirror usually leaves several letters untouched.

Known problems with upside down text

The borrowed Greek and Cyrillic characters can trigger mixed-script warnings, and some platforms reject the text in a name field rather than display it.

These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles — normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

Is upside down text a real font?
No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look upside down. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
Will screen readers read this correctly?
Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
