Worth knowing about X (Twitter)

X counts many characters from the mathematical block as two against the post limit. A post set entirely in bold therefore gets only about half as far as the same text in plain letters.

Common questions

Can I use styled text in my X (Twitter) username?
No. The handle accepts only letters, numbers and underscores, no spaces. Styled text works in the other fields listed above.
How much styled text fits in a X (Twitter) bio?
The limit is 160 characters. Whatever the number, combining styles such as strikethrough and underline halve it, because each letter carries a second character and both are counted.
Why does it look different on someone else's phone?
Each device renders these characters with whatever font covers them. Where coverage is missing you get empty rectangles instead of letters, which is more common on older devices.
A note on screen readers

These styles are not fonts. They are separate Unicode characters that merely look like formatted letters, so a screen reader does not treat them as ordinary text: depending on the software they are spelled out character by character, announced by their technical names, or skipped altogether. Use them sparingly, and never for content that has to be understood. Full explanation.
