Subscript Text Generator

Lowered characters. Unicode defines only part of the alphabet here, so the rest stays unchanged.

Where these characters come from

Subscripts are far less complete than superscripts, because mathematics needs lowered digits and only a handful of lowered letters. Roughly half the alphabet simply does not exist in subscript form, so those letters pass through unchanged.

What people use subscript text for

Subscript is used for the same lowered effect as superscript's raised one, usually in a decorative pattern alternating the two. Because only about half the alphabet exists, most words come out partly converted, which limits it to short strings or to text chosen around the available letters.

How to get subscript text

  1. Type or paste your words into the box above.
  2. Find the Subscript row — it is the first one — and press Copy.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it. The style travels with the text, because you are carrying different characters rather than formatting.

Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere. If the text arrives plain instead of styled, the receiving field normalised it; that happens for a specific reason and no tool can prevent it.

The same thing goes by several names — subscript copy and paste, lowered text — and they all describe this one technique. There is no settled term, because nobody named these character sets for this purpose in the first place.

Subscript vs Superscript

Superscript covers far more of the alphabet. Choose Subscript only when the lowered position is the point — pairing it with Superscript for an alternating effect, or mimicking a chemical formula.

Superscript ᵗʰᵉ ۹ᵘⁱᶜᵏ ᵇʳᵒʷⁿ ᶠᵒˣ

Known problems with subscript text

Roughly half the alphabet does not exist, so most words come out partly converted and look like a mistake rather than a style.

These characters fail in four distinct ways across all styles — normalisation, missing font coverage, stripped combining marks and mixed-script rejection.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

Is subscript text a real font?
No. These are separate Unicode characters that happen to look subscript. That is why the look survives copy and paste: you are not copying formatting, you are copying different characters.
Will screen readers read this correctly?
Usually not. Depending on the software the characters are spelled out with technical names or skipped entirely. Use the style for decoration, not for anything that has to be understood.
