Aesthetic Symbols

The soft, monochrome set used to frame names and bios. Unlike emoji, these take the colour and size of the text around them, so they sit inside a line without changing it.

The characters

Ready-made frames

These are the shape the style is actually used in — something symmetrical on each side of a word. To put your own text inside them, the text decorator builds them around whatever you type.

Dividers

What these characters really are

None of them were designed for decoration. ꒰ and ꒱ are Japanese half-width brackets, ʚ and ɞ are letters from the phonetic alphabet, ୨ and ୧ are Oriya digits, ⋆ is a mathematical operator, and ა is the Georgian letter an. They were picked for their shape, with no regard for what they mean — which is also why the style has no single origin to point at.

That borrowing has a cost. A frame assembled from four writing systems is exactly what mixed-script detection exists to catch, so some name fields reject it outright. And the rarer characters sit in parts of Unicode that many fonts skip, where they arrive as empty rectangles. The four ways these break covers it in full.

A note on screen readers

These are not fonts, they are separate Unicode characters. Screen readers often read them wrong or skip them entirely. What that means.

Common questions

What is the difference between aesthetic symbols and emoji?
An aesthetic symbol is a text character: it renders in the colour and size of the text around it, so it sits inside a name without changing the line. An emoji renders in colour at emoji size regardless. They are different characters, not two versions of one.
Why does my frame look different on another phone?
Font coverage. These characters come from Japanese, Georgian, Oriya and phonetic blocks that many fonts skip, so a reader whose font lacks them sees empty rectangles. Frames built from asterisks, dots and arrows survive far more widely.
How much of my bio do they use up?
More than they look. Several frames are six to twelve characters on their own, before your text. The bio builder counts the whole line against the real limit for your platform.
