Emoji or text symbol?
Everything on this page is emoji: it renders in colour, at emoji size, no matter what the surrounding text looks like. That is fine in a caption and awkward in a name, where it pushes the line height and sits taller than the letters beside it.
The alternative is a text symbol β β‘ rather than β€οΈ, β rather than β. Those take the colour and size of the text around them, so they sit inside a name without changing it. Most pages in this corner of the web mix the two freely, which is how people end up with a red heart they did not ask for. Ours are kept apart on every page.
Common questions
- Do emoji combos work everywhere?
- The individual emoji do, but they are drawn differently on every platform β the same combination looks one way on an iPhone and another on Android or Windows. Newer emoji also show as empty boxes on devices that have not updated, and the newest ones take a year or more to reach everyone.
- Why do some combinations break into separate emoji?
- Combinations like a burning heart are a single emoji built from several code points joined by an invisible character. Where that combination is unsupported, the parts show individually instead β a heart followed by a flame.
- Can I use these in a username?
- No. Every major platform restricts the @username to letters, numbers and a couple of punctuation marks. Display names, bios, captions and messages accept them.
- Will screen readers read them?
- Yes, and that is worth knowing: each emoji is read out by name. A combination of five becomes five spoken descriptions, every time the line is read. Two or three is courteous, a row of ten is not.
